NEWS RELEASE:

Career-enriching, non-credit certificate programs debut this fall

Would you care to broaden your computing skills? Be able to design a web site? Improve your office management abilities? Prepare for a new career in allied health? Know more about interior design?

Those and other areas of career and personal skill development are the focus of seven, non-credit certificate and training programs Purdue University Calumet’s re-organized Office of Continuing Education is introducing this fall.

Certificates are being offered in Web Design Graphics, Book Writing & Publishing, Interior Design, Print Design Graphics, Business Skills, Office Administration and Microsoft Office 2007.

Each certificate program is comprised of 10 to 16 classes of eight to 16 sessions. Evening class sessions, offered weekly or twice-weekly, begin the week of Aug. 25.

“Providing high quality professional development and personal enrichment is an important aspect of Purdue Calumet’s strategic commitment to community outreach,” recently appointed Continuing Education Program Developer Peter Van Colen said. Also an instructor and visual communication business owner, he offers 18 years of continuing education experience at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Continuing Education offerings this fall also include the following allied health career training courses: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training, EKG Technician, Introduction to Medical Terminology, Medical Billing & Coding, Pharmacy Technician and Phlebotomy Technician.

Additionally scheduled are dozens of professional development classes for school teachers in grades K-12, as well as Napoleon Hill Science of Success courses.

Exam preparation for Project Management Prep (PMP) Certification and Real Estate Salesperson Licensing will be offered, as well.

Individual, non-certificate computing classes are scheduled in Adobe Illustrator I & II, Adobe Photoshop I & II, Auto CAD 2007, Dreamweaver, Flash, Web Programming, Integrated Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), Introduction to Computer Graphics Overview, Microsoft Access I & II, Microsoft Excel I & II, Microsoft Word I & II, and Presentations with PowerPoint.

Nearly 40 total classes are scheduled this fall. Unlike credit classes, there is no in-state/out-of-state enrollee fee differential. The charge for most eight-session classes is $299 and $599 for most 16-session classes. Fees may be higher for specialty career training classes.

Course registration and more specific certificate/course information can be obtained on line at or by phoning the Office of Continuing Education at 219/989-4187 or 800/HI-PURDUE, ext. 4187.
