How to Apply

Applicants for graduate degrees must apply online for graduate study at Purdue Calumet. Applicants are first evaluated by a departmental committee at Purdue Calumet. If advanced for admission, the application is submitted to the Graduate School in West Lafayette for final processing and approval.

The basic requirements for admission to the English Graduate Program are:

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Graduation index of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale.
  3. A strong undergraduate major or minor in English or equivalent.
  4. Academic ability for graduate work.

Deadlines for applications are as follows:

For the Fall: April 15

For the Spring: October 15

For the Summer: March 15

Please note that while in the past the department has been flexible about the application process, it will enforce these deadlines from now on.

 

Application Process

  1. Complete an online application by going to http://www.gradschool.purdue.edu/admissions/apply.cfm.

    1. A $55.00 application fee must be received by Purdue West Lafayette in order to submit your application. This fee is payable by credit card online or by check via U.S. mail. The online credit card method is highly recommended since it allows you to instantly submit your application.
      • If you choose to pay by check, please allow 7-10 days before submitting your application. **Please be sure to save your application so that you can return and submit it at a later date!
      • You will make your check payable to: Purdue University
      • You will mail it, with the voucher found in the online application, to: Graduate School Admissions, Purdue University, Ernest C. Young Hall, Room 170, 151 S. Grant Street, West Lafayette, IN 47906-3560
      • If you have questions about the online application process, please call the Purdue University Calumet Graduate Admissions Office at (219) 989-2257.

  2. In addition to the online application, the student must complete and submit the following items to the department:

    1. Three letters of recommendation. (Download Recommendation for Admission to Graduate School - G.S. Form 3: PDF |DOC)
    2. Statement of Purpose. A statement of purpose is an essay of approximately 300-500 words explaining your purpose for undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to study at Purdue, and your professional plans, career goals, and research interests.  You may also explain any irregularities or special circumstances applicable to your background, and elaborate on your special abilities, awards, achievements, scholarly publications, and/or professional history.
    3. Two official transcripts from any previous college and university work completed. (Download Request for Official Transcript - G.S. Form 5: PDF | DOC)
    4. Other documents as required by the English and Philosophy Department.
    5. Other evidence of academic performance, such as a writing sample.
    6. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) , while not required by the department for admission, is recommended for those applying to the program.

An applicant is not officially admitted to the program until notification is received from the Graduate School at West Lafayette.
