Internship Opportunities
The Department of Communication and Creative Arts at Purdue University Calumet offers internships in
five areas of communication: Radio/Television, Public Relations, Business/Organizational Communication, General Communication
and Visual Communication. Internships are open to Juniors and Seniors majoring in communication, and are offered each semester of the year.
An intern is required to work fifteen (15) hours per week during the Spring and Fall semester, and 20 hours during the Summer session. The work experience is generally in the student's major area of degree concentration. Interested students generally contact the Internship Coordinator to begin the search. Contacts and interviews are arranged according to the students' vocational goals. Students may pursue internships on their own and are also encouraged to use the department's resource directory file to locate businesses interested in using interns.
Internships give the students an opportunity to gain experience in their chosen field of work and to experience corporate culture. Students may repeat the internship for three semesters, providing they experience a different aspect of the work and do not repeat what they have already learned.
From a business point of view, the internship is an excellent way to observe the working habits and interests of the students. If the student shows ability and interest for this particular kind of work, the business can make an offer of full time employment at the appropriate time. If the student is not well suited for the company, there is no commitment or obligation on the part of the employer to hire this person.
The internship program offers something for all. The student learns about the business world, the employer has no hiring obligations, and both student and employer learn a little about each other. Internships are a win-win situation for all involved.
